The Beatles. On the road 1964-1966

In early 1964, Harry Benson was about to take a plane to Africa when he was reached by a phone call from his photo editor of the “Daily Express”. He would have had to go to Paris urgently to tame the French Beatlemania. That was a truly defining moment in his career. Benson was warmly welcomed by the group and their entourage and became one of the British band’s closest photographers. In Paris he took the famous photo of the pillow fight at the George V Hotel; subsequently photographed their first trip to the United States and the impact with the collective hysteria that broke out in New York, the famous participation in the Ed Sullivan Show, the stop in Florida with the incredible meeting with Cassius Clay and finally the set of the film “All for One” (1964). The collaboration continued in 1966, when Benson was the photographer of George’s honeymoon in Barbados and the band’s well-known American tour. Benson’s bright blacks and whites show the Beatles up close as they compose, sing, meet their fans, chill out, and otherwise tackle their growing fame. In addition to the hundreds of photographs, many of which unpublished, the volume is enriched by the introduction written by Benson himself, and by quotes and extracts from the newspapers of the time.
